What could be more amazing than surviving an atomic explosion?

Hiroshima Bomb

This is the story of Tsutomu Yamaguchi.

On August 6, 1945, 29 year old Tsutomu Yamaguchi, an engineer for Mitzubishi Heavy Industries, stepped off of a city street car on a business trip. Unfortunately, he stepped off the street car in Hiroshima…just in time to be struck by the first atomic attack in history!

The blast blew out his eardrums and caused significant burns on his torso.  He, with thousands of other Japanese victims, was treated for his injuries and deemed stable enough to travel.

So Tsutomu Yamaguchi was sent home the next day…to Nagasaki!

Mr. Yamaguchi was at work on August 9, 1945, telling his boss about the explosion that destroyed Hiroshima, when the second atomic blast occurred.

Amazing, Yamaguchi survived not one, but two atomic attacks! He died on Monday, January 4, 2010 at age 93!

I don’t really have any sociology, and this is not the basis for some clever social analysis.  I just think it’s a cool story and had to share it.
