a category based on the absence of an attribute, in this case empirical reason, is often a weak explainer. If reason and evidence isn't motivating this movement, then what is? Dismissing this particular end of the "basket of deplorables" as idiots doesn't offer a satisfactory explanation of the phenomenon. Nor does it offer an opportunity to reach out to this group and maybe change their minds. There must be a better way to describe this phenomenon.
The learning curve resulting from the 2000 election, however, was pretty steep. I learned that, for the left, presidential politics isn't about ideological purity. It can't be. We will always lose on that front. Presidential politics is chess in which your every move is premised on your endgame.
Now, with President Trump as the role model, there's no reason to think that his success will be interpreted as anything less than an invitation for the Monstrous Deplorables to act on their hatred.
Over time, if not diligently confronted, the lie becomes accepted history. We cannot afford to let this particular lie become entrenched in our mainstream consciousness.
