Well, I am now, officially, a victim of the economy. This week I learned that the school where I was working, a school that focused on helping students with difficulties in other schools, or students will learning disabilities, was closing down. It’s a private school run for profit and has not been able to generate enough revenues to justify keeping it open. To their credit, the company that owns the school has done the best that they can to keep my school going, but a private business is motivated by economic contingency over the good that could be done for a few kids.
That being said, I would like to offer my thanks to certain individuals and groups who made it possible for me get where I am today.
First, I’d like to thank President Reagan and the Bush boys for their unfailing support of economic policies specifically designed to enrich their cronies at the expense of working people.
I’d also like to thank President Clinton for going against the espoused philosophy of his party and adopting neoliberal positions, which were, in essence, Reaganomics and Free Market hooplah. Thank you, Bill. Who needed that silly Glass-Steagal Act anyway?
I’d also like to thank Sen. Phil Gramm and his happy minions for lending legislative legitimacy to regressive economic policy.
Then there’s the corporate media, without whom none of this would have been possible. Thank you for selling out the working man in the interests of your stockholders. It was a courageous move to set professional, journalistic principles asside for greater commercial opportunities.
Of course, let’s not leave out the great Milton Friedman and his blind following for daring to perpetuate an antiquated economic philosophy which no informed economist would go near and selling this philosophy to policy wonks and politicians.
Without you, I don’t know where I would be. I’m sure that worrying about foreclosure and the plight of my family will inspire me to be even more diligent in persuing my future goals.
